Hi and thanks for the comment!

There's no doubt that most people would welcome the policing of comment spam by the search engines.

However, there are always going to be those — the people already concerned with the power & influence that Google exert — that aren't happy, and would be vocal about it, too...

It may be a form of policing the net, but it will surely be welcomed for the most part. I already strictly watch my comments as it is, google can help :)

Hi Kate, here's a thought: what if Google made their algorithms open source?

Then they no longer have to be the arbiters of 'Net law & order.

Everyone would be...

I think if Google, for instance, did begin to “police” spam comments, it would only have a positive impact on the internet experience. Yes, there would probably be some frustration and mistakes initially (non-spam getting penalized and sneaky-spam slipping through), but the process would be smoothed over time, just like all of Google’s other features.

Plus, conceptually I think it would have a big impact on content. It would force users to really examine their comments and make sure they are relevant, worthy, and an appropriate reflection of themselves or their internet brand.

I agree that this is certainly a concept for the future, but I don’t think it has to be too far off. The real question is, if comment spam was effectively eliminated – where would the trend move to?
