Yahoo! getting local on a global scale

Wednesday, 14 February 2007 — by Wayne Smallman

an image of the Yahoo! logoThere’s no doubting that Yahoo! have caught the scent of a success idea and are pushing the fold with the whole Mashups thing.

What with their previous Mashup efforts including Brand Universe and Pipes, Yahoo! are on a roll:

“A reader tipped us off about these new local city Mashups Yahoo is currently beta testing in Bangalore and New Delhi. The product is called OurCity.

Pretty nifty Mashups to boot: taking bookmarks from Del.icio.us, events from Upcoming, Flickr photos, News and even blogs. Flickr modules are seriously hot. They are taking data from Wikipedia and adding it to the mix.”

It’s amazing the distance that Yahoo! are getting out of linking Del.icio.us and Flickr together.

And when you add Pipes into the plumbing, which seems inevitable, all kinds of things will start to happen.

In a very real sense, Yahoo! are putting together the foundations of what could well be a hugely influential, independent travel guide.

Pulling in information on a place or region and throwing in some pertinent ‘blog entries and photos by people who either live, work or have traveled there, you can really see where this kind of thing is going.

Additionally, if you then roll the whole thing in some thick social glue, or tack on Yahoo! Messenger and let people talk about where they’re going, where they’ve been and what their thoughts are, you have a very compelling tool for the would-be and experienced travelers alike.

I’d say that Yahoo! are heading in the right direction…
