Apple iPhone to get ringtones via iTunes?

Tuesday, 27 February 2007 — by Wayne Smallman

As the weeks pass, more & more insights and rumors surface about the iPhone. May be a case of deliberate leaks, may just be idea speculation.

Always makes for fascinating reading, that’s for sure:

“The iPhone seems set to be more capable than first thought,… [speculation is that] Apple will sell ringtones for the iPhone through the iTunes Store.

Supporting this proposition, the report looks at a photo of the sync interface for the iPhone, which clearly shows a ‘Ringtone’ tab.”

Sounds suspiciously like my Apple iPhone wish list from November of last year. Although, I went a little bit further:

“Create my own ring tones in GarageBand.”

And let’s face it, if Apple are thinking different, that would be a very welcome feature addition.

Giving this a little more thought, how might Apple deal with ringtones in iTunes? Would they just be selected samples of their existing music library? Assuming the labels are happy with that idea.

Or, might they be full-blown ringtones, like the ones found in their millions on the Net, going for a dollar plus, which would just be a total rip-off, given full songs will be selling for less.

There’s no doubt that Apple would be well late to the party, but if we’ve learned anything about Apple, being late doesn’t mean being last…
