Adobe and Apple eye Ides of March

Wednesday, 21 February 2007 — by Wayne Smallman

an image of the Adobe logoImagine my surprise when I read the following headlines: “Leopard set for March” and: “Photoshop CS3 shaping up for March release” earlier today. Might there be a reason for this?

It’s certainly tempting to make a connection.

With regards to the former:

“If web rumour mongers are to be believed, Apple is shaping up to unleash Leopard at the end of March. Cupertino’s finest already stated that they’d be dropping the new version of Mac OS X in ’spring’ but if this release date is confirmed, it’s far earlier than initially expected.”

And regarding the latter:

“Whether Photoshop CS3 will take advantage of Leopard-dependent technologies is uncertain, however, but sources have speculated the release date arriving around Leopard’s is in part likely due to cross marketing opportunities between Apple and Adobe.”

That was my question answered.

Given that Adobe have been busy with the beta version of the Creative Suite 3 for some time, can we assume that Adobe are looking to make the most of the new bells & whistles in Mac OS X 10.5, also known as Leopard?

Could be.

And if you’ve been paying attention to my ruminations on Apple, Adobe and Microsoft for the past few months, Adobe could well be hoping to renew their relationship with Apple as a foil for Microsoft’s moves into Adobe’s back yard…
