Can you Digg it? Apparently, some can’t!

Friday, 12 January 2007 — by Wayne Smallman

OK, a bunch of websites have been banned from Digg. The policy that the guys at Digg employ is draconian, to say the least. Some of these people deserved to banned, others have been banned because of their members abusing the service being provided to them by the service provider. Others like Oliver of Redonka seem to have been caught on the in between.

A recent post on Redonka covered some intriguing ways of circumventing the ban on Digg, which made for engaging reading, and I’m sure it’s a hot topic on the web of late.

Anyway, I have my own views on this. Yes, there are those who feel compelled to get back onto Digg, but I have to question the methods used.

If it was me being banned, I’d attempt at least to contact Digg and ask for some clarification. However, looks like Oliver over at Redonka tried this, and all his efforts were in vein:

“A couple of weeks ago my site was banned from Digg. I have written several emails trying to resolve the issue with Digg but I have had little luck. I have scanned the internet and I have found that there are many other sites that have had the same problem.”

That’s a shame.

And what avenues for recourse he’s left with are dark and less trodden ones, unfortunately.

It’s pretty bad when it comes to this, and Digg having taken such an odd and apparently arrogant line won’t do them any favors, either.

That aside, I don’t think I’d want to play the Digg game anymore if I’d been banned, so I posted my comments:

“OK, all of this bending over forwards as well as backwards to appease the gods of social web stardom seems a little extreme to me.

I’m a member of a business networking web portal, and they’ve been banned, too.

Banning the TinyURL domain is astonishingly stupid.

Talk about overkill. I’m pretty sure the vast majority of people using the TinyURL service aren’t trying to pull a flanker on Digg…”
