5 things about me…

Thursday, 11 January 2007 — by Wayne Smallman

Now, I don’t normally participate in this kind of thing, but here goes.

I’ve been tagged by Francesco Iovine and Rony John, so now I have to tell you something more about me and my life.

Here are 5 things about me…

  1. I have a medical condition called Hyperthermia, which is brought on by various local and general anesthetics. The first sign of this was when I had to have my appendix removed when I was 16 years old.I wasn’t responding to the anesthetic, so the drugs weren’t rendering me unconscious. The anesthetist had to stay during the operation because I kept coming around. My temperature went well into the hundreds and I had to be packed in ice like peas or scampi, for example. When I was 21, I had to have a tooth removed. The dentist gave me three shots of local anesthetic, and other than becoming visibly extremely warm, as well as being in dire need to piss like a dray horse, there was no meaningful reduction in pain.So in the end, the choice was to either go to hospital – where I might not get in straight away – or have the tooth pulled sans anesthetic. Needless to say, the pain of having a tooth pulled in the absence of anesthetic is quite, quite unpleasant.

In some countries, such acts are the domain of torturers, whereas I elected for this exquisitely painful experience.

  2. I’m 6 foot 7 inches tall. No, I’m not tall & thin, I’m actually proportionally as broad as I am tall, which would make me appear quite imposing to some people .. I imagine!
  3. My surname is Smallman. Which in light of my height is often the focus of many a rib-tickling festival of mirth & merriment .. at my expense, usually. However, we Smallman’s are known for our thick skin, so I’ve been immune to this kind of stuff since I was like, 10 or something.
  4. I’m a man of education, apparently. Well, I’ve got some letters after my name, anyway.
  5. Shortly before the dental incident, I was to be found ensconced in Los Angeles for 8 weeks, sunning myself on the Northridge university campus, part of the University of California.Wintering in sunnier climbs at my parents expense, I spent much of my time avoiding any meaningful scholastic work and instead found myself more suitable diversions, such as drinking, eating, sunbathing around the pool, eating, carousing, running up & down Santa Monica sands in mid February, drinking, confusing the shit out of the locals and wondering just where the hell all of the pavements had gone .. oh, and eating & drinking.Seemingly, everyone in Los Angeles drives and had little time for walking. Me being firstly English and secondly a Yorkshireman, walking is what we do; up hill and down dale. So all of this driving around seemed a little indolent to the likes of me, who would think nothing of walking into the next village some mile or so away.

I’m tagging…

  1. Carl Grint, because he deserves it, and that’s not in praise, either.
  2. Sebastian Döll, because I’m just curious about whether he’d go for this kind of thing.
  3. Tim Griffin, because I’m pretty sure he will, and he probably deserves it, too.
  4. Stephen Olsen, who seems a nice enough guy, so he deserves it, also.
  5. Maria Carolina Ayerbe, who is at times painfully and inexplicably nice to me, so she definitely deserves it.

For those I didn’t mention, think yourself lucky, for now.

I’ll think of something suitably awful and save it for when you’re least expecting it…

Cool, thanks! Keep up the great work! (Hmm, there I go being nice for no reason, again!)

I am continually vexed by your ceaseless congeniality and remorseless pleasant disposition…

Thank you for tagging me, I hope that I can do a lot more in the next couple months :). I hope you give me feedback.

Aha! When you say I deserve it do you mean “because he’s so nice” or “that’ll teach the little bastard!” … ?

Either way, I’ll endeavour to dig out some juicy facts that people don’t already know, which is difficult seeing as my second favourite discussion topic is myself.

Have I miscalculated? 6 foot and 7 inches are 2 metres! I’m 178cm tall…

Hi guys!

Well that sort of worked well, didn’t it? ;-)

Tim, you deserve it, and I shall say no more.

Sebastian, always happy to give feedback.

Franciov, yes, 2 metres. I thought I’d go with feed and inches just to see if someone was curious enough to follow up.

Thanks for the feedback…

Always interesting to find out more about the person behind the witty articles : )
