One to watch: Skype VoIP

Much has happened since my review of Skype. Since then, Computex 2005 in Taipei has seen the introduction of a number of VoIP-compliant telephone handsets, several of which offering Skype compliance.

For a company like Skype, who clearly have major ambitions, this is something more than a simple nod of recognition. This is a service rapidly becoming the poster child for VoIP acceptance in the business world.

To some, the idea of wearing a USB headset from the likes of Plantronics in a regular business environment is more than a little off-putting. So a regular telephone handset is a step in the right direction.

In addition to various hardware tie-ins, Skype can now boast video calling:

“Skype users can now download a free plug-in from Dialcom that will enable video conferencing using the Skype P2P engine. The Spontania Video4skype, allows any users with a webcam connected to their PCs and a Skype account and broadband internet access, to make video-calls using the Skype client.”

Clearly, Skype is on something of a roll, and is now very firmly on my ‘one to watch’ list.
